BOARD OF TRUSTEES
Our Board of Trustees help steer the organisation as we seek to expand our work and reach more communities across the North East.
I became a trustee to give back to the charity that did so much for me. I joined Skimstone Arts as a young person, so I've been on the receiving end of all the good they can do. As an alumni I still speak to current members of the Young Artist Collective, and it's important for the young people to see what one of their own could aspire to. My background is in local authority work, having worked with Gateshead Arts Development Team and the Licensing department. I also bring my knowledge of Arts Award: having done the award myself, having worked for Arts Award/Trinity College London themselves, and I'm a trained Arts Award adviser. I hope to use my knowledge and experience of Skimstone to help them carry on into an ambitious and bright future.
I've admired Skimstone's work for many years and so I'm delighted to be joining as Chair of the Board of Trustees and to be working with such a brilliant staff team and Trustee colleagues. I began my career working with homeless people in Newcastle and then worked for many years in UK National Education and Training agencies as a policy maker and funder. Later I returned to the voluntary sector where I have been Chief Executive of The Josephine and Jack Project on Tyneside since 2016. I was also a Co Director of Monkfish Productions and still sit on their Board of Trustees. I bring a passion for inclusive community arts and belief in the broader creative potential of communities.
I am honoured to serve as a Trustee with Skimstone Arts because I believe wholeheartedly in the organization's mission and values. Skimstone Arts provides a welcoming and safe space for diverse artists and communities, fostering creativity and expression. The commitment to promoting equality and visibility in the arts and society resonates deeply with me, and I am passionate about supporting those at risk of social isolation. As a software test engineer by profession, I find immense fulfilment in contributing to a cause that extends beyond my day-to-day work. Being involved as a volunteer musician, playing the clarinet, allows me to connect with others through the universal language of music. Skimstone Arts' dedication to creating work with, for, and about the world that matters to individuals aligns perfectly with my values. I believe in the power of the arts to bring people together, spark conversations, and foster a sense of community. By serving as a Trustee and participating actively in Skimstone Arts' activities, I am committed to supporting the organization's vision and contributing to the positive impact it has on artists and communities. I am inspired by the opportunity to be part of a charity that encourages risk-taking while maintaining a nurturing environment. Together, we can continue to make a meaningful difference in the lives of those we serve.
Skimstone Arts strong commitment to work with (in other words to co-create with) people who find themselves at risk of social isolation really appeals to me. As a young adult I joined an Amnesty International theatre group and performed together with refugees from Chile and Uruguay. It opened up a world for me and helped me realise on a deep level that we are one world family. Since then I have worked with people from different parts of the world and I have done different art projects with them. It has always confirmed my belief that we are connected and that our society is enriched by inclusivity, diversity and creativity. I became a member of the board of trustees to support the wonderful work Skimstone Arts is doing as a diverse, inclusive and artistic community for the wider community.
